Rogue/Fake Antivirus Virus

For the last several months at Isis I.T., we've had many computers become infected with a fake antivirus virus. It tricks the computer user into clicking on an install program for an antivirus removal program, often called "Antivirus Live" "Advanced Virus Remover" and "Internet Security 2010". Once installed, this program is very difficult to remove and causes not only nuisance items like pop-up windows that report false virus infections, but tries to get credit card information in order to pay to remove the fake infections.

Keeping your real antivirus program up-to-date is key to avoiding this problem, but we are also noticing it is being changed to disable many common antivirus programs. We are currently encouraging people to upgrade their Windows XP operating systems if possible, since those systems are the most vulnerable to this attack.

There are several steps involved in removing this virus, so if you are infected with it, consider calling Isis I.T. to help you to remove it and install software like Microsoft Security Essentials in order to guard against re-infection.
