University Directories
The Challenge: University Directories is the largest publisher for university phone books in the nation. They recently acquired many accounts from their largest competitor, doubling their size in a matter of weeks. The challenge was to double the capacity of their IT infrastructure within 3 months before ads started coming in for the next school year.
The Plan: We took their current needs and tripled it to allow not only for growth in the next year but for years to come. This required flexibility and scalability for all new equipment. Eight new servers were ordered and built filling various roles including database server, Microsoft Exchange Server, 2 file servers, FTP server, image scanning server, pagination server and web server. Most of the functionality was already there so these servers had to be added to the existing infrastructure without interrupting service.
The Outcome: Keeping the deadlines on target, all servers were put online without interrupting service as the season ramped up.
1360 WCHL AM
The Challenge: 1360 WCHL AM was purchased by Vilcom in 2003 from Curtis Media. Isis I.T. was asked to come up with an on-air automation system that would run the station 24 hours a day and allow for local and live shows produced at WCHL. We had a 4-month deadline to evaluate the systems, install them and teach the board operators, traffic operators and the production team how to use the system. Though the station was being purchased, it was starting from the ground up in terms of building, equipment and staff.
The Plan: After going to the National Association of Broadcasters Radio Show convention in Seattle, we found a system that matched their needs and their budget. We had to wait for the studios to actually be built and the engineers to run all of the necessary systems and cables. Once this was done, we needed to install the automation system as quickly as possible and train everyone on how to use it before the launch.
The Outcome: With only 2 weeks to launch, the studios were done and the automation system was installed within 1 week. The install included setting up the logs for automation, setting up all of the interfaces with the satellite equipment for network shows, importing all of the commercials and locally produced shows for launch. Then we had to train all board operators how to use the automation system during local broadcasts. By launch the station went on air and started broadcasting becoming one of the leading talk stations in the Triangle.
Dr. Law and Blue Water Spa
The Challenge: Dr. Law and Blue Water Spa are both leaders in their fields in the Triangle area. They had a need to move from their old I.T. support company to another along with helping them move from one database management system to a new system that fit their practice and spa better. It also required that all computers be assessed and upgraded where needed including getting the wireless system working with their mobile wireless touch pad laptops.
The Plan: Inventory the wired and wireless network. Assess the use of the in-house servers and make sure they were being used appropriately. Accommodate the transition from one database system to the new system. Configure the mobile wireless touch pad laptops to work within the wireless network.
The Outcome: Built up the wireless network with a new wireless access point and multiple repeaters throughout the building to allow for the laptops to work where needed and increase wireless security. Reconfigured the database server to allow for the install of the new database system. Upgraded all desktops to allow for a longer life span. All work was done without interfering with their daily operations.
Active Living by Design
The Challenge: Active Living by Design is a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is a part of the UNC School of Public Health which establishes innovative approaches to increase physical activity through community design, public policies and communications strategies. ALBD asked Isis I.T. to come in and help them assess their internal I.T. needs.
The Plan: We found that they needed an in-house file server along with the functionality of Microsoft Exchange for their groupware needs. They also had a large amount of desktops and laptops that needed maintaining, working with the pre-existing systems of UNC.
The Outcome: Isis I.T. came up with a monthly service plan that fit the requirements of ALBD on a weekly basis. We ordered and set up a Microsoft Exchange system that also acted as their file server. We provided ALBD with a stable I.T. environment for over 3 years.
